The Certification for Sustainable Tourism Program - CST - is a product of the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT). The CST was designed to differentiate businesses of the touristic sector, based on the degree to which they comply with a sustainable model of natural, cultural and social resource management. CST is regulated by the Costa Rican National Accreditation Commission and consists on a scale of 5 "levels" of sustainable tourism achievement.

Notwithstanding, this initiative is supported by a National Accreditation Committee which has been oficialized by the executive decree (No. 27235-MEIC-MINAE), where all sector related to this subject take place. In addition, the educational sector is represented by the Costa Rican University (UCR) and the Central America Business Administration Institute (INCAE). The private sector is represented by National Tourism Chamber, International organizations such as UICN and The Earth Council. Finally, the public sector is represente by the Costa Rican Environment & Energy Ministry (MINAE) and the Biodiversity National Institute (INBIO), as well as the ICT, which is the responsible of the program implementation.

Arenal Manoa Hotel is awarded in level TWO, the evaluation was made on April 2009, actually we are in evaluation process to get level THREE.

What is CST all about?

Four fundamental aspects are evaluated:

· Physical-biological parameters
It evaluates the interaction between the company and its surrounding natural habitat.

· Infrastructure and services
It evaluates the management policies and the operational systems within the company and its infrastructure, regarding the energy saving, water polluting and waste handling policies and technology.

· External Client
It evaluates the interaction of the company with its clients in terms of how much it allows and invites the client to be an active contributor to the company's policies of sustainability.

· Socio-economic environment
It evaluates the identification and interaction of the establishment with the adjacent communities. For example, it analyzes the degree in which the touristic companies help to the growth and development of the region with the generation of new employment or the achievement of benefits in favor of the collectivity.

The programs developed since November 2008 to the present are presented below:

Recycling Program

Arenal Manoa Hotel has nine recycling stations around the hotel and two areas called pre-collection centers. Those centers receive the garbage left in the rooms and in the recycling stations. The garbage of the pre-collection centers is finally disposed in the storage area or collection center, which is located two hundred meters from Supplies Storage on the way to Manoa Farm.

Rooms’ Washing Delay (Tools and Bedding)

The rooms’ washing delay is a program that consists on encouraging the guests to reuse the towels and the bedding instead of changing them every day. Arenal Manoa Hotel has placed informative signs in the rooms to familiarize the guests with this program; hence, they can help with it. Each sign describes the steps that the guests need to follow in order to execute this initiative. The Housekeeping Department is essential for the program because it is in charge of accomplishing it.

Water and Electricity Saving Programs

The hotel has implemented water and electricity saving programs by encouraging its employees and guests to practice saving methods of both sources.

Sustainable Work Procedures’ Improvement

The implementation of the CST has developed new procedures in which not only the hotel’s employees but also its guests participate. Therefore, each of the procedures are evaluated and provided with feedback in order to improve and direct them towards a sustainable environment.
